How MindReset is designed to work.

MindReset is grounded in the Split-Second Unlearning (SSU) model and the concept of Emotional Memory Images (EMIs). [1],[2] Together, these frameworks propose that many persistent stress reactions are driven not by conscious beliefs, but by rapid, protective patterns formed during earlier difficult experiences.

Emotional memory images: fast, protective learning

According to the EMI model, when a highly emotional or threatening event happens, the brain can store a non-conscious memory pattern: an emotional memory image. It isn’t necessarily a literal picture. It is a compact pattern linking sensory cues, emotional intensity and the body’s defensive response.

Its job is protection. If the brain later meets a similar cue, it can set off the stored survival response in milliseconds, putting speed ahead of reflection. That helps in real danger. In everyday life, though, the same response can be triggered by an email, a conversation or performance pressure. The body reacts first. The mind explains later.

Why talking can keep the brain on guard

Many approaches begin by discussing a problem in detail, and that can help. But describing a distressing event can also activate the emotional network linked to it, moving the nervous system towards a fight, flight or freeze state. In that state, the brain is organised around protection rather than learning, which is one reason emotional change can feel slow.

Memory reconsolidation: when change is possible

Research on memory reconsolidation has shown that when an emotional memory is briefly reactivated, it can enter a temporary window in which it may be updated, if the brain meets new, contradictory information. [3],[4]

  • Without a corrective experience, the memory settles back unchanged.
  • With one, its emotional charge can lessen as the brain revises what it expects.

For this to happen, the memory needs to be active while the nervous system stays calm enough to learn.

Why speed and curiosity matter

SSU emphasises working at the speed the protective response was first formed: within a split second. Working quickly, before the defensive reaction fully builds, is intended to reach the pattern without overwhelming the system.

The state encouraged during sessions is curiosity. Instead of “This is dangerous: defend,” the internal message becomes “This is interesting: observe.” MindReset aims to activate the pattern briefly, keep awareness calm, and allow that updating to happen, rather than intensifying emotion through long retelling.

The role of the eyes

The eyes are closely linked to attention and to the brain’s threat-detection systems. Clinical traditions such as EMDR have long used structured eye movements in how memories are accessed and processed.

The EMI model proposes that subtle eye movements may reflect activation of the underlying emotional memory. MindReset’s eye tracking picks up those movements to guide each session in a precise, contained way. It runs entirely on your phone: no image or video is recorded or sent anywhere.

What people describe

When a pattern shifts, people often describe the trigger feeling more neutral or distant, the body not reacting automatically, and the situation being easier to think about calmly. Experiences vary, and some people notice little or no change.

Published model

The SSU model and emotional memory images are described in two peer-reviewed papers in Frontiers in Psychology. [1],[2] They set out the theory; they are not trials of the app.

Other early data

Stress and energy.

MindReset has been evaluated in several small exploratory datasets using wearable stress, wellbeing and fatigue measures. These findings inform our continuing research programme and are not controlled clinical evidence.
